Sri Lanka sought enhanced military training from India :Sri Lanka has sought enhanced military training from India. President Maithripala Sirisena during his visit discussed the wide-ranging matters including bilateral defence cooperation between the neighbouring countries and regional security.  He also requested to increase the number of personnel trained by India. Currently, over 60% of Sri Lanka’s military personnel pursue their young officers’ course, junior and senior command courses in India.  Also at the conclusion of the ‘Exercise Mitra Shakti’, the sixth edition of the joint military training exercise between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army the two countries jointly planned and executed a series of “well-coordinated tactical operations based on scenarios that are likely to be encountered in the rural and urban environment.The two-week programme is part of an initiative that began in 2013 as part of military diplomacy between India and Sri Lanka.

85% of Ujjwala beneficiaries still use solid fuel for cooking :Research Institute for Compassionate Economics,85% of the Ujjwala beneficiaries in rural Bihar,Madhya Pradesh,Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan still use solid fuels for cooking.The survey, conducted in late 2018 covered a random sample of 1550 households in 11 districts of the four States,which collectively have two-fifth of the country's rural population. Out of 85% of the surveyed households, 53% exclusively used the chulha, while 32% used both.

Biannual Army Commanders Conference began in New Delhi :The biannual  Army Commanders’ Conference began in New Delhi for the planning and execution process of the Indian Army. Some issues like the management of the extant security dynamics, mitigation of future security threats were discussed in this conference.Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered her opening address at the conference and the Chief of the Army Staff chaired the conference. To spread peace and brotherhood, a music and poetry festival titled ‘Jashn-e-Ittihaad’ was held in New Delhi :On 6th April 2019, a music and poetry festival titled ‘Jashn-e-Ittihaad’ was held at the Jamia Milia Islamia central university in New Delhi to spread awareness about unity amongst the youth.In this event, people enjoyed the soulful Hindi and Urdu poetry, music and performances that made them feel good as well as spread awareness about unity and integrity.

Around 5000 Konyak women dance to set a Guinness World Record at Mon, Nagaland :The festival is celebrated for the arrival of Spring and for a good upcoming harvest.The theme of the Aoleang Monyu festival aka Mini Hornbill festival was ‘Empowering women for cultural heritage.Konyak Union in coordination with other organisations of the tribe, namely, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) and Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) organized the event.The objective of the event was to preserve the cultural heritage of the region and the people and to promote tourism.

NTPC signs Rs. 2,000 cr term loan pact with Canara Bank :State-run power giant NTPC has inked a term-loan agreement with Canara Bank to raise Rs. 2,000 crore, which would be used to part finance its capital expenditure.The loan facility is extended at an interest rate linked to 3-Month MCLR of the Bank.In February this year, NTPC had signed a term loan agreement for Rs. 5,000 crore with State Bank of India. The loan facility from SBI was also aimed at part financing the company’s capital expenditure

RBI tweaks LCR norms to boost liquidity :RBI has tweaked liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) norms to provide an additional 2 per cent window to lenders. LCR indicates the proportion of highly liquid assets held by banks to ensure their ability to meet short-term obligations.RBI has extended the timeline for linking floating interest rates on personal, home, auto and MSEs loans to external benchmarks.

Usha Padhee Takes over as Pawan Hans’ Interim CMD :On 7th April, 2019, Usha Padhee, joint secretary in the civil aviation ministry take over as additional charge of the post of Interim Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the Pawan Hans Limited.She has been given charge of interim CMD of the helicopter services providing company. The post was vacant since the superannuation of then incumbent B P Sharma.

World Bank estimates India’s GDP grow to 7.5% in Fiscal Year 2019-20 :The real GDP growth is estimated at 7.2 per cent in FY18/19. According to the latest World Bank’s report, data for the first 3 quarters show that growth has been broad-based.Industrial growth sped up to 7.9 per cent which means the services growth will decelerate. Agriculture growth remains at 4%.The primary growth enhancer is the domestic consumption whereas gross fixed capital formation and exports contributed to growth. With sturdy growth food prices are said to recover whereas inflation is approximated to come down to 4%. The consolidated fiscal deficit is expected to decline (to 6.2 and 6.0 percent of GDP in FY19/20 and FY20/21 respectively).

The 2019 Malaysia Open, officially the CELCOM AXIATA Malaysia Open 2019, is a badminton tournament which takes place at Axiata Arena in Malaysia.This year, sports event was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 2nd to 7th April, 2019. It has a total purse of $700,000.

Graham Reid appointed as chief coach of India mens hockey team :Reid was part of the silver-medal winning Australian team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Reid's appointment till the end of 2020 was ratified after Hockey India received necessary clearance from the Sports Authority of India (SAI).India had been without a chief coach since Harendra Singh was sacked after last year's World Cup Reid will be in charge of the team during their next international assignment -- tour to Australia in May 2019.

Scientists have discovered a mechanism named “death switch” in the plant’s immune system that may yield stronger crops :On 5th April 2019, Chinese scientists have discovered a mechanism named “death switch” mechanism in the plant’s immune system that can keep the plant healthy.This new mechanism triggers infected cells to self-destruct and thus limiting the spread of the disease.Scientists from Tsinghua University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Genetics and Development Biology did the research and it was published in the journal named ‘Science’. Also, this discovery gives the clues for cell death control, immunity for plants, and can lead to a new generation of disease-resistant crops that use significantly less pesticide and are more environmentally friendly.

A group of jumping spiders spotted for the first time in Ernakulam’s Illithodu forests, Kerala :On 5th April 2019, a new species of jumping spiders has been spotted in Ernakulam’s Illithodu forests, Kerala by the arachnologists from Kochi’s Sacred Heart College, Thevara.This new species belong to the genus Habrocestum and has been mostly found in Eurasia and Africa. The survey was funded by the Department of Science and Technology – Science and Engineering Research Board.

Guwahati Railway station first to get ISO certification in India :The Guwahati Railway Station has become the first ever railway station in the Indian Railways to get an ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) certification from the National Green Tribunal (NGT).It has been given this certificate for providing passenger amenities in a clean and green environment. ISO certification received by Guwahati Railway Station is ISO-14001, which is for Environment Management System as per international norms which were upgraded in 2015.

RBI issues norms for banks to set up currency chests :Reserve Bank of India(RBI) rolled out with guidelines for banks to set up new currency chests, which include the minimum area of 1,500 square feet for the strong room.The new chests should have a processing capacity of 6.6 lakh pieces of banknotes per day. It added that for those situated in the hilly/ inaccessible places, capacity should be 2.1 lakh pieces of banknotes per day.

Israel to go to polls to elect new parliament :Israel will go to polls to elect a new parliament. Fourteen main parties are competing for 120 seats in the Knesset or parliament. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is running for his fifth term in office. His main challenger is Benny Gantz, a former chief of staff for Israeli military who is a newcomer to politics.   The main Voters will cast their ballots for a party, not a candidate.
